7 Signs Your Hearing Health Is Declining

April 01, 2025 CarineK Santé 484 times

Hearing loss can occur gradually, so much so that it's sometimes difficult to notice in everyday life. However, early detection often helps you better maintain your quality of life and limit worsening. Here are 7 common signs that may indicate your hearing health is beginning to decline.

1. You systematically turn up the volume

Whether it's the television, radio, or your phone, if you constantly need to turn up the volume higher than usual—and higher than those around you—it's a warning sign.

2. You have trouble following group conversations

In noisy environments or when several people are talking at the same time, do you have difficulty understanding what's being said? This phenomenon is common during the early stages of hearing loss, especially for high-pitched sounds.

3. You often ask for repetition

If you regularly find yourself saying "Excuse me?" or "Can you repeat yourself?", your hearing may have declined without you realizing it.

4. Sounds seem muffled or distant

When certain everyday speech or noises seem less distinct, as if your ears are blocked, this may indicate a gradual decline in your hearing.

5. You experience ringing or whistling (tinnitus)

Tinnitus—sounds perceived without an external source—is often linked to hearing loss. It can appear as constant or intermittent hissing, buzzing, or crackling sounds.

6. You Avoid Certain Social Situations

When following a conversation becomes too difficult or tiring, it's common to gradually withdraw from certain events or gatherings. This withdrawal can be an indirect sign of hearing loss.

7. You Feel Tired After Extended Listening

The extra effort required to understand others can lead to significant cognitive fatigue. If you experience unusual exhaustion after meetings or extended conversations, it's worth investigating.

When to Seek Help?

If you recognize one or more of these signs, it's advisable to consult a hearing care professional or ENT specialist for a comprehensive hearing test. An early assessment allows us to better understand your situation and consider appropriate solutions.

Remember: Taking care of your hearing also means taking care of your quality of life.
